Mount Baruntse Expedition

Trip Introduction

Mt. Baruntse (7129m/23389ft) is located in the heart of the Himalaya in the Khumbu region. It is very close vicinity to Mt. Everest and Mt. Makalu. It is located away from the standard trekking paths so climbers can experience a sense of being in a remote area without investing a considerable amount of time and effort. The Baruntse expedition becomes increasingly popular with climber wishing to escape from the peak climbing on the overcrowded Ama Dablam and Pumori. Baruntse expedition is a month-long adventure and an extraordinary aesthetic objective for mountain climbing in Nepal. The summit of Baruntse is located at: 27° 52¢19² N / 86°58¢55² E. Baruntse first become famous when a New Zealand expedition including Colin Todd and Geoff Harrow summited the peak on May 30, 1954, via the Southeast Ridge. This has now become the normal route for most Baruntse expedition.
There are two ways of trekking to the peak. One is from Lukla via Mera La Pass (5800m) and Hunku glacier with the possibility of climbing Mera Peak as a part of the adventure. The other is from Tumlingtar (Sankhuwasabha) along the Makalu access trek and west Barun glacier. The first option includes a high pass crossover and walks out via Mera La Pass to Lukla, a full spectrum mountain climbing adventure in Nepal. From the mountain climbing, aspect Baruntse has a bit more objective hazard then Pumori; on Baruntse you will encounter 50° climbing slopes. The expedition offers incredible views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Makalu, and the surrounding Khumbu region peaks and mountains. The best chance of a successful summit is in the spring but the mountain is also climbable in the autumn.
Baruntse is also prone to cornice accumulation, which adds to the aesthetics of the climb but at the same time, it increases the objective danger of the climb making it prone to avalanche. Also, there is a prominent ice cliff at 7000m which could collapse. The Barun Tse expedition can be a good objective in preparation for the Everest expedition.
Climbing 7000m requires slightly more acclimatization effort than Peak climbing. The remote location of Baruntse has an advantage for climbers in that it aids acclimatization while trekking either of the two approach routes. From the base camp (5350m) Baruntse requires two intermediate camps to execute the summit and to aid acclimatization.
Swagat Holiday Treks began to the operator the precious Baruntse Expedition for technical mountain lovers. This mountain can be a good preparation climb for any 8000m expedition that you are dreaming up. Some prerequisites to this climb are experiencing snow and ice, basic knowledge of using ice Axe and crampons, and one or two 6000m trekking peaks. We have fixed departures on Baruntse Expedition for both spring and autumn seasons. Our high quality and well-managed package for the Baruntse Expedition is set up for the mountain lovers who want to realize their dream of climbing a Himalayan Peak.

Fully equipped with all the climbing equipment and we will follow the guidance of experienced climbing experts and climb closer to the summit. Weather conditions can change in seconds, so taking weather conditions into consideration we will overcome several technical climbing sections and climb to the summit of Mt. Baruntse. Our much waited and tiring climb to the summit is rewarded with a magnificent view of Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Nuptse, Chamlang, Mera Peak, and other surrounding high peaks in the region. We will spend some quality time at the summit and start our descend journey following the same route back to base camp. The climbing period has no fixed day to day itinerary as it will be decided by the expedition leader and the guide. They will decide the day to day routine including the time to be spent on the advanced base camp and the higher camps, based on the physical fitness, health, and the condition of the climbers. So before we attempt to summit Mt. Baruntse we acclimatize setting up two camps excluding the advanced base camp. There will be a total of two Camps set up on the ascent to the summit as follows:

Camp I (6135m)
This camp is located on a glacial plateau. We get here by climbing the south –East Ridge leading to the West Col. It is pretty much a gradual climb to the West Col, however a fixed rope is used to overcome an ice cliff at an angle of 50 degrees. After crossing the cliff we reach the spot of our Camp I. like before, we go down to the advance base camp and climb up again to Camp I, stocking up the camp with food. This also helps in acclimatizing. Once the timing to climb up to Camp I is constant, we advance further to Camp II.
Camp II (6400m)
A fixed rope is needed to get to Camp II, which the Sherpa guides will do beforehand. On the way, we come across a long glacier. Using a fixed rope, we overcome the glacier and as we near a small col on the South East Ridge, the slope steepens. After climbing the slope we reach the location of our Camp II. We push for the summit from Camp II.
Summit Day
We start our expedition early at around 1-2 am. After an early breakfast, we head out climbing up a steep ice wall angled at 45 degrees leading us to a small col at 6500m. Along the way, we also ascend through a short rocky section but the main challenge is overcoming the sharp ice shoulder at 7000m. Conquering this will lead us to the summit ridge. We climb up the ridge which eventually narrows to the Baruntse summit at 7129m. Enjoy the panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga among others.
The descent starts as we retrace back to the Base Camp. The climbers must exercise extreme caution as their bodies will be in extreme fatigue. We then head towards Camp I and spend a night there. The next day we head down to the base camp.
